Description:

We are currently looking for 2 Associates. 1 for the Sector Team and 1 in the Fund Supervision Team

Sector and Fund Supervision team function and the Asset Management Department  

The Asset Management Department is responsible for the Supervision of asset management and alternative firms and their funds.

The Sector team is central in managing and mitigating risks by providing technical support and industry oversight for firm Supervisors. The Sector team manages the risk process for all departmental portfolios - additionally serving as the main contact point for cross-FCA initiatives in policy, competition, innovation, and specialist supervision departments.

Fund Supervision Team supervises investment funds, getting to the heart of ‘what asset managers do’ and ensuring we continue play a role in preventing harm to consumers, financial markets and promote competition. The team is developing a series of quantitative Fund Supervision tools to complement an established re-active framework for product related issues and provide ongoing technical support for firm Supervisors.

Both teams contribute to several international workstreams involving broader asset management issues and both teams require individuals with demonstrable data management and analytical skills.

Associate roles

We are recruiting for two separate Associates:

Sector Team - to broaden the technical and policy expertise of the Sector Team,

Fund Supervision - contribute to the integrity of the Fund Supervision function including development support for a pro-active, quantitative framework.

The successful candidates will have gained experience in the asset management (or related), ideally in an analytical capacity or a data driven role. You will be capable of understanding high-level strategic issues, support multiple projects simultaneously and have strong data management skills.

Key roles and responsibilities

  • Providing analysis and intelligence on the asset management sector, as well as expert input to related policy initiatives
  • Assist the design, build, testing and maintenance of embryonic quantitative, data led, Fund and Industry analytics.
  • Support Asset Management Firm Supervisors deliver contemporaneous market and product intelligence to enhance industry engagement
  • Assist with the departmental risk process, including department-wide risk meetings such as the fortnightly ‘Risks & Issues’ meeting
  • Participate in the identification and prioritisation of emerging asset management risks
  • Writing reports, making recommendations for supervisors to implement, preparing briefing notes, drafting speeches and giving presentations to FCA senior management and other regulatory bodies
  • Contributing to the technical analysis of firms’ business models
  • Building relationships with a range of stakeholders internally and externally
  • Communicating sector knowledge and insights to other asset management staff, both inside the team and more widely

Skills/Experience Required    

Minimum

  • Experience of manipulating raw data to drive analysis and the subsequent measurement of real world outcomes.
  • Strong written language and stakeholder management skills
  • Direct experience of project management style situations
  • Advanced experience of Excel and/or databases

Essential 

  • Understanding of the organisational, legal and regulatory environment in which asset management operates; main business models in the asset management sector, and existing investment products
  • Proven analytical and data management skills
  • An understanding of the principles of programming software such as Python or R
  • Capacity to process, manage and analyse complex information flows
  • Basic understanding of risk management and risk analysis tools
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to think strategically and organisationally when prioritising a large number of high profile and competing projects and demands
  • Willingness to work independently, as well as collaboratively with colleagues, in order to achieve objectives
  • Independent thinking and competence to reach sound and timely conclusions
  • Effective influencing skills with an ability to challenge with confidence

Desirable 

  • Knowledge/experience of the asset management sector itself and its regulatory framework
  • Previous involvement with European or UK Policy work
  • Practical experience of programming software such as Python or R
  • Familiarity with the FCA's thematic and firm-specific risk methodologies

  • London – up to £53,000
