As Managing Editor, you will be reporting to the Editor in Chief. You will manage the daily publishing schedule and help manage a team of editors and freelancers to develop VICE UK as a destination for compelling and unique journalism. You will pitch, commission and edit first-class editorial content and will sometimes be called upon to provide editorial cover or produce content yourself.
In the short term
Pitch, commission and edit short-form and in-depth features
Manage editorial workflow and oversee publishing calendar
Work closely with the EIC to enforce editorial guidelines and brand voice
Manage the commissioning budget in collaboration with the EIC
Assist Socials Editor with packaging and formatting decisions
After 6 months in this role
Manage deadlines and process creation for tentpole projects on the content calendar
Work with EIC and regular contributors to manage existing editorial franchises
Establish more effective production processes and workflow
Chair editorial meetings when needed
Work with the TikTok and Instagram team on new ideas for vertical storytelling
And after a year
Pitch and help to execute ambitious multi-platform editorial campaigns, franchises, longform features and/or investigations
Responsibilities:
Pitch, commission and edit short-form articles and in-depth features
Oversee editorial workflow, publishing calendar and article deadlines
Work closely with Socials Editor and wider socials team to package and format articles and generate ideas for Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat
Work with EIC and VICE finance team to track and reconcile department budget
Act as key point of contact for finance enquiries relating to the editorial department from VICE finance team and any freelancers/vendors
Work with the EIC and socials editor to ensure VICE reaches quarterly traffic and socials goals
Assist the EIC and other newsroom leaders to achieve the vision for VICE UK and the overall digital VICE operation
Represent VICE at internal and external meetings, as and when required
You have these:
At least 3 years of experience editing and leading teams in a newsroom or publication and/or previous experience in a senior journalism role (e.g. section or deputy editor)
Strong editing skills and acute attention to detail, including proven ability to work on editorial campaigns, investigations and/or features
A knack for finding smart, interesting and insightful stories from the fringes
A firm grasp of stories that young people are interested in
An understanding of the VICE brand, in terms of both visuals and voice
