Description:

The successful applicant will be a key member of the KPMG Commercial, Technology and Data (CTD) team and will be responsible for making first-class knowhow easily available to the CTD lawyers so that we can increase the quality, consistency and cost-effectiveness of our client facing work. They will have a real interest in this area of law, a very strong work ethic and strong academic qualifications.

Key responsibilities

Culture

  • Collaborate closely with knowledge management (KM) team across all practice areas, sharing best practices with them and learning from them.
  • Encourage the knowledge-sharing culture within CTD by building strong relationships with the lawyers, based on understanding and trust, to facilitate the sharing of quality knowhow and expertise.

Engagement support

As required by your practice area lead:

  • Provide technical advice and research input for specific client engagements.
  • Contribute to client pitches.
  • Supply marketing collateral, marketing and bid support.
  • Assist with developing client-facing resources.

 Know how resources

  • Implement and communicate KPMG Law’s KM strategy within CTD.  
  • Work with the Head of the CTD team and the Head of UK Knowledge Management (HKM) to identify and prioritise projects.
  • Draft and maintain the CTD’s knowhow resources, (templates and knowledge management system) with the aim of providing a comprehensive set of first-class knowhow materials.
  • Respond to queries from lawyers and track queries to identify knowhow and training needs.

Current awareness

  • Monitor legal developments and share relevant information across CTD.
  • Ensure that all know how materials are updated following relevant legal developments.
  • Draft and coordinate current awareness updates, client alerts and other publications, where appropriate.
  • Research, monitor, analyse and inform the CTD team of legal and industry developments and trends, articulating how they will affect CTD’s practice and clients.

Training

  • Asses the learning needs of the lawyers of all levels in the CTD team and (in conjunction with KPMG’s Learning and Development function) design a training program to meet those needs. This could involve developing, coordinating, preparing and delivering high-quality training materials (using internet-based solutions where appropriate).
  • Assist lawyers with preparation of training materials for internal and external training events.
  • Introduce new joiners to the firm's and CTD KM resources.

LegalTech

  • With the HKM and KPMG LegalTech team, design develop and promote CTD’s pages in the firm's KM system to meet the needs of the CTD team.
  • Work with the LegalTech team to identify opportunities for knowledge to solve CTD business challenges and improve client service.
  • Monitor knowledge and legal technology trends in CTD and ensure adoption of those which will improve KPMG’s ability to serve its clients efficiently and in a cost-effective manner.

Business Development

  • Work with the CTD’s business development function to identify opportunities for internal and client-facing knowledge sharing, business development and marketing initiatives. 
  • Liaise with lawyers to gather ideas for thought leadership.
  • Provide legal research and legal technical content needed to underpin technical  products.

Qualifications and characteristics

Experience knowledge and qualifications

  • Solicitor or barrister with a minimum of 6 years’ PQE.
  • Prior experience as practising lawyer in commercial law, data privacy, IP and IT.
  • First class drafting skills.
  • An interest in, and knowledge of, new technologies and their potential impact on knowledge systems. 

 Communication, presentation and listening skills:

  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and with intellectual rigour on both practical and academic issues.
  • Ability to deliver impartial strategic advice in a consultative manner.
  • Confident in dealing with personnel at all levels.
  • Positive and enthusiastic about all aspects of law and legal KM.
  • Strong listening skills with the ability to discover and understand the needs of stakeholders.

Relationship building and networking skills:

  • Team player with a 'can-do' attitude and the empathy and determination to work effectively with stakeholders.
  • Ability to motivate and persuade lawyers to contribute knowledge and to adhere to knowledge processes.

Organisation and time management skills:

  • Strong project and change management skills.
  • Independent self-starter with strong motivation to complete tasks. We expect our PSLs to be able manage themselves to deliver high quality work on time.
  • Confident in seeking guidance as required, seeking new challenges and supporting others in the team.
  • Structured approach to tasks with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify and prioritise and manage multiple proactive and reactive tasks and requirements, balancing long and short-term priorities.
