Description:

We are on a mission to up-skill humanity through the invention of new digital products. To make this happen, we are searching for exceptional people that don't stop at great, know when to move fast or slow, are relentlessly curious and, ultimately, care for each other.

We are a start-up design and technology incubator, first tackling the cyber security industry. And we come with the might of a wider group of companies, all with the same ethos and history of achievements.

We're looking for a strategically-focused Head of Engineering to join our rapidly growing team. You'll be leading the development function across several product teams that are focused on building products to educate and enable individuals. If that sounds like something you'd be excited about, we'd love to talk.

About the role

Engineering at Magnetic Rock is focused on solving hard problems without over- engineering. We work with a range of technology stacks, importantly using the right tool for the job. We are a creating team of industry experts focused on creating great outcomes from our products.

In this role, you will work closely with our General Manager and Founders, as we establish the technical function together. You'll be in charge of designing, recruiting and leading a number of exceptional product engineering teams. You'll own technical strategy across the business and a suite of products, using your influencing, people management skills to help us build top-class products that make an impact. You will also be ultimately be responsible for the technology and infrastructure that underpins our products. If that sounds like something you'd be excited about, we'd love to talk.

Typical activities in your week may include:

  • Establishing and improving engineering standards, tooling, and processes across product teams. Creating our technical ways of working that integrate with product practices we make.
  • Defining hiring plans, interviewing candidates, onboarding and managing new technical hires. Plus, supporting our new Academy programme to upskill new talent.
  • Working with product teams including Product Managers, Designers and Developers to advise on the best technical approach for a product.
  • Working with the management team as a key stakeholder in iterating our company strategy, technical processes and long-term plans.

There is lots more information on our mission and culture on our website, so you can find out if we're the perfect match. Like all our roles, this job is remote but we'd like you to be based in the UK. You'll be reporting to the General Manager.

About you

We need someone who is as comfortable working with a team to architect a system as presenting to a board. You'll be a great communicator, people manager and technical strategist. You'll be a long term thinker and short term doer, with a history of building amazing products. We don't expect a hands-on coder but previous experience in a technical discipline and across technology languages (and therefore empathy with engineers) would be great.

Your role will progress as the company grows. At first, we'll need you to form a strategy on core technical setup, perhaps be hands-on and then quickly hire a team around you to bring your strategy to life.

Any experience or passion for cyber security and the products that we build would also be ideal but not critical. Ideally we are looking for a candidate with experience or interest in working for a product-led organisation, where we are all focused on building the best products we can for our users!

The benefits

We hope that you love your job because of our mission, culture and the work. But, we also put a lot of thought into providing great benefits to make your job that bit sweeter, such as:

  • Flexible & remote working. We are a remote-first business with flexibility for you to work in tandem with your home life. We also have access to an office in the Cotswolds so we still meet up regularly, but more for socials.
  • Great equipment and software. All team members use high spec Mac's and the latest software to make working enjoyable and easy. Plus, we can kit you out with any peripherals you may need.
  • Generous holiday. 28 days plus bank holidays per year, and we close over Christmas.£1,000 annual training bonus. Self-improvement is an important aspect of our values so we are committed to funding your development, every year.
  • Swag bag. We want you to feel welcomed so expect a pretty sweet new starter pack.
  • Private health. We offer Vitality health insurance that comes with its own perks from free cinema tickets to a discounted Apple Watch.
  • Referral programme. We are growing rapidly so if you introduce us to an amazing person who joins us then we'll pay you £1,000 as a little thank you.
  • Thoughtful onboarding. Joining a new company can be daunting, we want you to succeed so we have a programme to get you up to speed with our culture and your role.
  • A bigger team. We're part of a collection of companies (including Helical Levity, Spinning Fox and Secure Impact) run by the same leadership team. So there is lots of shared learning and some epic summer parties.
  • Quick recruitment. We appreciate finding a job is time consuming and often slow, so we aim to move from first interview to offer within two weeks.
