About Shelter

A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent.

We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.

About the team

A key part of our Income Generation Directorate, the Planning & Improvement team is the glue that binds together all income generation appeals, activities and products. We exist to enable and accelerate delivery of Income Generation’s strategic plan. A key focus of that plan is to be raising more money from fewer products by March 2023. You’ll play a big part in helping us achieve that goal.

About the role

We’ve already achieved a lot in our efforts to reshape fundraising, but this is a great opportunity to use your fundraising and data analysis/insights expertise and make a major contribution by networking and influencing across Shelter to drive further change. You’ll be leading a cross-organisational project that critically evaluates the performance of our income generation portfolio and making strategic recommendations on where to prioritise our investment to help us raise more money from fewer products. We’ll also look to you to establish an approach for us to assess performance on an ongoing basis.

The overall aim will be to reach a point where we have a robust growth strategy and a clearly prioritised and balanced portfolio of income generating activity that brings in enough income, while also ensuring long-term sustainability. Along the way, you’ll partner other teams across Income Generation and build strong relationships with senior stakeholders throughout the organisation. Indeed, a significant part of the role will involve challenging assumptions and having tough conversations. And, when it comes to influencing, coaching and training teams to adopt new ways of working, again, we’ll count on you.

We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.

About you

Highly collaborative, flexible, diplomatic and assertive, with great influencing and negotiation skills, you have a broad fundraising background and the ability to see the bigger picture and build productive relationships with a variety of teams and stakeholders. What’s more, you’re both curious and tenacious to get under the skin of our income generation portfolio and identify where to focus your efforts. High levels of emotional intelligence are important too, as is the ability to deal with ambiguity – i.e., seeing through different changes and multiple initiatives such as raising more revenue from less products, and using data to help focus minds and set tangible targets across the charity. Digesting complex data and extracting key insights comes naturally to you too, as does switching between the fine detail and that bigger picture. Comfortable leading matrix teams to achieve a shared objective, you know how to lead and embed change too. What’s more, you’re familiar with strategic planning tools like SWOT, PESTLE, Boston Matrix etc. and have a real interest in keeping ahead of emerging trends.

Benefits

We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
