Description:

Do you have a strong working knowledge of the housing policy landscape in Scotland and, ideally, familiarity with empty homes work? Then join Shelter Scotland as an Empty Homes Partnership Officer and you could soon be proactively supporting a Scottish Government funded project aimed at bringing long term empty properties back into use.

About Shelter Scotland

A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet over a million people in Scotland struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

At Shelter Scotland we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent. We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter Scotland and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.

About the team

Part of our Communication & Policy Department, the Scottish Empty Homes Partnership (SEHP) aims to enable private sector empty homes to be brought back into use across Scotland. The Partnership achieves this through a mix of policy work, capacity building, training, best practice sharing and awareness raising with councils, community groups and others. It is also home to the national Empty Homes Advice Service - a public facing advice line for owners of empty homes as well as anyone concerned about empty property in their area.

About the role

As Empty Homes Partnership Officer, you’ll be responsible for supporting the Scottish Empty Homes Officer Network - an established network of Empty Homes Officers working across councils in Scotland. We’ll also rely on you to work to maintain and develop new partnership links with others that have an interest in bringing empty homes back into use, including community groups, housing associations and third sector partners. Encouraging and influencing Councils to mainstream empty homes work within their existing service will be important too, as will gathering evidence on opportunities and barriers to bringing empty homes back into use. And, when it comes to setting out specific learning lessons and recommendations for future sector development, again, we’ll look to you to deliver.

 About you

To succeed, you’ll need a relevant background and a real desire to help bring positive change to the Scottish housing landscape. You’ll also need a demonstrable track record of developing and delivering training and a proactive approach to analysing and sharing best practice. Strong communication skills, including the ability to influence others, is also required, together with commercial awareness, lots of initiative, great problem solving skills, the ability to work collaboratively and respect for others opinions.
