Description:

Are you a natural communicator and storyteller with impressive relationship-building skills?  Are you a great team player with a passion to end the housing emergency? Do you have a creative flair and experience of entertainment, celebrity or events PR? If so, this is the perfect role for you.

In the exciting new role of Senior Media Officer, you will play a key part in the day-to-day running of a busy press office and lead on the development and implementation of exciting fundraising media campaigns, such as our flagship No Home Kit initiative, as well as events, like Stand Up for Shelter, and media opportunities with top celebrities.

About Shelter

A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare.  Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction.   So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home.  We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time.  This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home.  Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent. We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.

About the team

The fast-paced and high-performing media team comprises of Head of Media, two Media Managers, three Senior Media Officers, three Media Officers, and an Assistant Media Officer.  The media team is a key part of the Communications, Policy and Campaigns division, but we serve the media needs of the whole organisation and we work closely with a broad range of internal stakeholders, as well as our external partners, to generate influential coverage across Shelter’s campaigns, fundraising, community and services outputs.

About the role

As Senior Media Officer, you will plan and deliver media strategies for a range of activities and campaigns specifically focused on our income generation work, including high-profile national events and initiatives, celebrity engagement and community fundraising. You will initiate coverage by creating media plans and assets (e.g. research, multimedia content) and selling in to journalists across the full media mix, identifying and responding to stories as they break, and providing media expertise, training and ongoing advice to colleagues.

We will also count on you to secure opportunities for placing interviews and features with high profile supporters and case studies that tell their stories in a way that is authentic and connects emotionally with our audiences to inspire action, and to write high-quality media lines, press releases, briefings and other press materials that communicate our messages in a clear, simple and effective way to target audiences.  Building and maintaining relationships with journalists, producers, media professionals in partner organisations and media agencies is a vital aspect of this role, as is consulting and collaborating with colleagues from across Shelter in developing targeted press materials.

About you

Creative, results-driven and collaborative, you will have relevant experience of working in a busy press office, PR agency, or as a journalist, and have a good track record of managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders.  You will understand the inner workings of the media, what makes something newsworthy, and how to land high-impact coverage, in particular, you will have a keen grasp of what journalists and producers are looking for. You will be comfortable working with consumer media and on celebrity led content and features – and know how to tailor your pitch accordingly.

You will also have extensive knowledge of media tactics and techniques (traditional, digital, video, photography, podcasts etc) within news, entertainment and consumer media, and your communication skills will be second to none, with the ability to craft engaging media content to captivate a wide range of public audiences. Outstanding interpersonal, relationship-building and prioritisation skills are vital as is a keen eye for risks and opportunities and strong attention to detail.
