Role x You

The Director of Publishing at i-D will be handling the end to end operation, production, commissioning budgets of the magazine, editorial operations, liaising with pre-press, printing, distribution and circulation teams.  They will have strong diplomacy skills and a wide understanding of operations and the production of i-D from magazine to online to video. The Director of Publishing will be a real team player, with a diverse skill set including; team management and support, an understanding of finance and revenue tracking / forecasting, a strong understanding of digital advertising and media, an eye for creative excellence, deep knowledge of how a magazine is put together from paper stocks to binding techniques and an knowledge of photographers, fashion talent and the production process at large. 

  • In the short term…

You will see through the launch of the next issue of i-D, working on the Press plan, the asset send out, distribution sales and any associated marketing events. 

  • After 6 months in this role...

You will have built relationships with the pre-production house, printers and distributors. You will have a firm grip on the mechanics of the budget, the spend and the reconciliation. You will have planned ahead for the next two issues in terms of ordering paper, barcodes etc.

Responsibilities:  

  • You will work closely with the Managing Director and the Finance Director to determine financial and operational objectives and success metrics for the i-D brand.

  • You will work closely with the FD and MD on forecasting, reviewing monthly reporting on the financial tracking of all departments and editorial budgets.

  • You will have ownership of budget planning - you will work to allocate each section of the print and fashion week budgets and handle individual questions on budget additions and exemptions from the team as they arise. You will work with FP&A on acquiring Project codes for each line item within the budget and routing all approvals of POs created by team members. 

  • Working closely with the fashion and editorial teams on each commissioned shoot and production, you will ensure all legal requirements are met including talent release paperwork, photographer and writer agreements are all signed including any insurance requirements. Liaising with Vice legal as necessary. 

  • You will liaise with the video production teams on each project and help support the video team in planning, budgeting and resourcing when working on Print related video content. 

  • You will determine schedules and deadlines for editorial deliverables and work with the team to ensure they are met on time and within budget. To do so you will confirm print specs and on sale dates balancing the Commercial team and the Editorial team’s priorities.

  • You will evangelize the magazine internally to all key stakeholders via EMEA and North America wide calls as scheduled. 

  • You will be responsible for the Print growth strategy - working with the Distributor to assess marketing opportunities, engaging in quarterly business reviews,  strategically reviewing retail partners and onboarding new ones. You will set OKRs to reflect this and feed back poignant information to the wider Editorial team and EIC as necessary.

  • You will liaise with the Global Communication team on the roll out of each issue and coordinate approvals of press materials via EIC and collate all downloadable assets. 

  • You will maintain and manage the i-D store with each magazine release, linking with social teams and the distributor and warehouse for orders. 

  • You will maintain the i-D store for merchandise, working with the warehouse distribution centre, liaising with buyers on questions regarding orders. 

  • For ad-hoc merchandise launches you will work with the EIC and MD on price points, production, fulfillment and any talent or designer liaison. 

  • You will liaise with HR and Finance with regards to freelancer requests and subsequent onboarding with IT for emails, access etc.

  • You will work with Legal on establishing Scope of Work documents for editorial partnerships, merchandise and publishing deals.

  • You will be the brand guardian who will have oversight of the production quality, liaising with the wider VICE commercial and content ops teams to maintain brand integrity and the delivery of exceptional client service

  • You will oversee the leveraging of internal resources as needed in order to be maximally efficient with client budgets and streamline internal processes as much as possible, this includes communication between HR and Payroll when internal resources are allocated and approved.

  • You will be a trusted resource and center of excellence for best practices across editorial and partnership production

You have these: 

  • You’ll have solid experience in a project management role with a clear and intimate understanding of production processes, budgeting and P&L

  • You will possess demonstrable commercial acumen and are confident in your ability to deal with (and negotiate with) clients, suppliers, talent agents, casting directors etc. as well as internal parties.

  • You must possess an intrinsic knowledge of the fashion industry

  • You’ll have first-rate judgment and an eye for talent, with a strong understanding of who’s who in the world of fashion

  • You will have excellent time management skills and have the ability to work to tight deadlines

  • You will be an excellent written and verbal communicator

  •  To be an ambassador for the business at all times
