The Role:

This is a key role that sits at the heart of VICE Europe, within our Global Production Services group, providing vital operational leadership and support for our thriving video content business. As the Head of Production UK & EMEA you will be responsible for leading the production management function and community across our regional editorial content output with a particular focus on the UK hub.  You will manage people and resource ensuring that functional excellence, efficiency and compliance of our output.

As the senior-most production management lead in the region you will also have a key role in establishing production protocols, policies and best practices, working in close collaboration with the SVP Global Production. 

You will directly oversee budgeting, scheduling and production management across all editorial content in the UK (ie. non-branded content) working in partnership with the creative leaders across our platforms, and with a key role in the regional production leadership group.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide ultimate oversight for the Production Management department and function, with overview of the status of each production; implement and maintain communication and management systems that will ensure this occurs.

  • Oversee production management status of projects from development, prep, production, and post-production to delivery.

  • Collaborate closely with finance and business leaders to track,  reconcile, analyse and report on production finance and utilisation performance on both an individual project and business unit level.

  • Review and approve production cost reports.

  • Collaborate closely with leaders and key counterparts in creative, post-production, finance, R&C, legal and other key business functions.

  • Draft and negotiate project budgets, schedules, cash-flow and  production plans  

  • Create and manage the annual department budget, and contribute to annual editorial budget setting

  • Source and engage production team and key personnel

  • Be the key regional and local point of contact for Vice production counterparts around the world needing to produce in the region. 

  • Meet with staff and freelance production managers, line producers and creative producers & executives in budget and production meetings to monitor and guide individual productions.

  • Ensure processes are in place to monitor and drive effective utilisation of our people and resources.

  • Work with Legal to prepare Agreements for certain key personnel (including Production Accountant, Line Producers and Consultants). 

  • Attend production start-up meetings, ensuring new productions have a full set of information required.

  • Track and process approvals and production payments with Legal and Finance

  • Negotiate key deals with third parties (Broadcasters, Suppliers, Talent etc.) securing terms and rights that are favourable to the business, and required to meet project needs.

  • Oversee the implementation of the Company policies on all of the productions including risk assessments, Covid-19 Mitigation protocols, H&S, child protection, data protection and bribery policies.

  • Monitor the progress of production and offer solutions to any production management problems that may arise.

  • Instil and maintain a ‘high production value’ culture, where efforts are made to ensure maximum value goes on-screen.

  • Consider, encourage, implement new working practices to responsibly capture potential production efficiencies that could lower cost of production.

  • Ensure correct procedures for ends of contracts and that appropriate handovers are undertaken when key crew leave the production.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support a high-performing team.

  • Work alongside the department’s senior leadership team to set/implement the strategy and objectives of the business.

  • Create an open and transparent culture that supports people to do their best work.

  • Work alongside HR to recruit, retain and develop production talent – including managing performance. 

Desired Knowledge Skills & Attributes:

  • Experience at HOP or Prod Exec level

  • Experience on the production of content about legally sensitive subject matters, and where crew safety & security, contributor anonymity and compliance are key considerations.

  • Significant experience setting up international production and shooting abroad is essential.

  • Minimum 10 years of production management experience.

  • To be passionate and excited about Vice / VMG and the content we produce.

  • Track record of developing production talent and building high-performing teams.

  • Experience of leading change and introducing new ways of working including new technology and processes.

  • Experience creating and monitoring business plans and budgets, cost reporting and production status reporting.

  • Experience collaborating closely with and influencing creative counterparts.

  • Experience producing high quality content across all digital & linear channels and platforms – with significant experience of long-form factual a must-have.   

  • The ability to build constructive and influential working relationships at a senior level.

  • Good communicator with the skills and experience to influence colleagues and peers, without having direct line management authority over them.

  • Awareness of commercial drivers within the business and industry.

  • Experience of managing procurement processes in a cost effective way

  • Familiar with the media industry developments; audience, regulatory etc.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects at once is essential.

  • Must have a flexible and adaptable skillset, able to see the big picture, and be solution-orientated.

  • Able to use good sense and initiative at all times.

  • Ability to communicate clearly, prioritise tasks and work under pressure is essential.

  • Must be committed to creating a supportive and positive work environment
