The Platform Engineering team is part of Platform Services within IT Operations.  The Platform Engineering team maintain the Bank’s development and release platform, the Operational Platform. This is used to deliver and operate the Bank’s applications using a mixture of in-house and industry leading products. Becoming a digital bank is one of Virgin Money’s key strategic objectives so working in Platform Engineering means supporting our technology platforms as we move towards this objective. It’s a fabulous place to be!

We're looking for a technical specialist to bring expertise and knowledge to help us develop our logging and monitoring and capacity management capabilities. We’re looking for someone who loves the techy side of being a technologist but also someone who cares about delivering great customer experiences. At the heart of this role is a passion for delivering the principles of observability, monitoring and capacity management to enable us to take the resilience and stability of our platforms to the next level.

Day to day you’ll be working on a prioritised Kanban backlog of work covering the breadth of logging and monitoring tools used by the ban, both on premise and in the cloud. You’ll have a keen eye for spotting opportunities to do things better using your experience and best practice. Insatiable curiosity will inspire you to learn and develop on the go as our technologies change.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

  • Bringing expertise to support development of our monitoring and capacity management capabilities
  • Developing, supporting and maintaining the bank’s monitoring, logging and capacity management platforms through an enterprise  transition to Azure 
  • Identifying, engineering, quality assuring and implementing technical solutions  
  • Supporting our the wider team through the proactive identification of risk and swift resolution of issues
  • Collaborating with internal and external parties to provide excellent customer service 

To be successful you’ll need to bring:

  • Industry experience in implementing monitoring, logging and capacity management solutions ideally with a strong operations background
  • Experience of a range of logging, monitoring and capacity management tools such as AppDynamics, Dynatrace, ELK, TICK, SCOM, Filebeats, Grafana, Kibana
  • In depth experience of developing and integrating toolsets for the collection and storage of time series data
  • A proven and successful track record of using data modelling techniques to predict future platform risks and issues
  • Technical expertise with the ability to own diagnose and resolve platforms issues
  • A positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills to influence stakeholders 
  • Experience of delivering components of a monitoring and capacity management strategy and roadmap
  • Good problem-solving skills

We’d love you to have (but not essential):

  • Practical experience working within large multi-platform environments
  • Demonstrable experience of working with stakeholders
  • Experience in our toolchain : Openshift / Kubernetes, Docker, GIT version control and Github usage (including direct API access), Jenkins, GoCD, Bash
  • A developer mindset and automation skills to match in languages such as Python, Java or JavaScipt
  • Excellent and varied shell script programming (Linux / Windows)
  • Knowledge of Azure DevOps
  • Experience of Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery tools and ways of working
  • Advanced Jira expertise including REST API approaches
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary agile teams
