Zoom has taken a creative approach to flexibility in the workplace, with the use of tools and resources to guide new flexible work arrangements to benefit their employee's work and personal life. The company recently announced over its first-ever “Work Transformation Summit", that employees would be able to choose how they work. 

Zoom’s workforce grew from 2,400 to 6,100 employees from February 2020 to December 2021, and these employees, according to Zoom, are more geographically dispersed than ever. Remote work has become integral to the operation at Zoom.

Flexible Working Approach

In this era of work transformation, Zoom is enabling a flexible working environment for our employees. Work is no longer just a place but a space where we come together to collaborate in different ways.

We offer modern working arrangements that accommodate our increasingly dispersed global employees — coupled with tools, resources, and principles to guide our new work reality. Our goal is to empower, enable and deliver happiness to our employees. 

We make Zoom’s Workstyles employee-led because we trust our teams — our individual contributors as well as our managers — to do their best work from wherever they feel the most comfortable, and to leverage the Zoom platform to do this as we navigate our new work styles together.

Zoom employees choose from three work styles, based on which fits them best according to the following guidelines:

In Person: Employees hired with the purpose to be in the office daily, as defined by the role and responsibilities. This applies to a select number of roles and, if this is the case, the job description will state the role must be In Person.  

Remote: Employees who live beyond a reasonable commute from their closest Zoom office or who do not plan to go into an office on a regular basis. Remote employees are welcome into Zoom offices, if they choose to go in periodically or for certain events. 

Hybrid: Employees within a reasonable commuting distance who choose to go into an office a certain number of days a week or month regularly.

Part-time: An employee who works fewer hours than a full-time worker. There is no specific number of hours that makes someone part-time, but a full-time worker will usually work 35-40 hours a week.
Flexi-Time: This is a working schedule that allows employees to choose when they start and end their workday, usually to accomodate an individuals needs and other commitments outside of work.
Compressed Hours: This is where an employee increases the volume of hours worked each day in order to reduce the number of days worked.
Full-time: A full-time employee works between 35 and 40 hours per week, usually on a permanent contract.
Hybrid Working (Office / Home): This means an employee splits their time between the workplace (usually office based) and remote working (usually at home).
Remote or Mobile Working: This is a type of working arrangement that allows an employee to work from a remote location outside of corporate offices.
Work From Home (WFH): This is where an employee has the ability to set up their workspace at home, and manage their work without the need to go to the office.
Office Working: This refers to an employee being physically present in the workplace to fulfil their contractual responsibilities.
Career Breaks / Sabbatical: These are an extended periods of agreed absence from work. The term is often used interchangeably with "sabbatical", which is generally taken to mean a shorter period of leave of several weeks or months.
Shared Parental Leave: This allows parents to share a portion of leave and pay with their partners to care for children from birth, usually until their first birthday.
